Week 10 Lab: TED Talks: Stories and Storytelling

Image
(A picture of a TED Talk stage from the audiences view.  Photo by TEDx Sydney )  For story lab this week, I have chosen to watch the Stories and Storytelling TED Talks . The first video, The Danger of a Single Story by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was really fascinating. That talk discussed the problems of the single story. One problem was that single stories lead to misunderstandings. The second problem with the single story was that it made people lose some of their dignity. I thought this was a super interesting topic. This video made me reflect on any misconceptions I may have of other countries, states, or people due to reading the same types of books that were basically all just a single story. I really enjoyed the first video. The second video was Imaginary Friends and Real-World Consequences: Parasocial Relationships by Jennifer Barnes. This was also an interesting topic. It took a psychology standpoint, which I thou...

Week 6 Lab: Overview of Mythology

(Just a simple picture of the whole theme of this blog.  Photo by Yael Beeri ) For story lab this week, I have chosen to watch three crash course videos. These are my note over the three videos. What is a Myth? This video was about how it is hard to define exactly what a myth is because myths are very complex. Characteristics of a myth: A myth is a story. A myth usually involves a very important topic. A myth has survived being passed from generation to generation. A myth is usually about the creation of the world as we know it. Mythology is basically a huge jumble of theories. Theories of Myth This video reviewed different people throughout history, who have created a theory on mythology, which are still believed today. Here are some of the those theories: Plato believed myths were lies, and also said the myths about gods are absolutely unrealistic. Euhemerus believed that myths were just the way for the people who lived before him to explain thin...

Week 4 Lab: The Creative Life

Image
(A photo of a TED Talk stage. Photo by Wikimedia Commons ) For the story lab this week, I decided to watch two TED Talks, Copyright is Brain Damage and A New Theory of Human Intelligence . The first video examined the effects copyrights had on creativity. The second video scrutinized the trend of putting people in intelligence categories, from a young age to the young adult stage of life. I now realize after watching these videos, that in general children are brainwashed from a young age to not think creatively. For me it was the exact opposite. These TED Talks opened my eyes to a issue I was never exposed to. As a child, I was three when my sister started in a program called Destination Imagination. Destination Imagination is a program that presents seven different problem in August every year, and a team of seven members have to solve the problem by presenting a skit with props, costumes, and all that jazz. There are usually two team managers per team, however, help of any ...
