Week 12 Review

Image
(Only a few more weeks until summer!  Screenshot by me, Hannah Mulder) This week I have backed up my website and portfolio website. I am also less than ten points away from finishing this class with the grade I want.  My favorite video this week was from Thursday's announcement . The video was Epified: Names of Hanuman . I chose this video because I wanted to see if I missed any connections to Hanuman throughout the semester. I did not, but the video was interesting and informative because it shared what the background of each name was. My favorite graphic this week was from the  announcement on Thursday as well. I though the mythology humor was pretty funny. It is unfortunately the truth though. I definitely have the problem of going on my phone before getting work done. It was for sure a relatable topic.

Week 12 Lab: TEDed Language

Image
(Not completely sure what this is, but it describe the topic of this blog post perfectly.  Photo by Toby Downton ) TEDed Language Lab How Languages Evolve Way back when, groups of people split from their original groups and were isolated. So, different dialects turned into new languages. There are between 3,000 and 8,000 languages nowadays. How did English evolve? Germanic language turned into Old English.  Old English got mixed in with Old Norse French and Latin got thrown into the mix and there English was. How many verb tenses are there in English? 3 grammatical tenses  4 grammatical aspects Are Elvish, Klingon, Dothraki, and Na'vi real languages? Conlang means constructed language. These languages are developed enough to actually speak them. Where do new words come from? 1,000 new words are created every year on average. New word maybe borrowed from other languages. New word can be mixes of a couple or several words together. How to use a s

Reading Note: 7 Secrets of the Goddess, Part B

Image
(A photo of a woman in India. Photo by Nick Kenrick ) Gaia's Secret Parts 3 and 4 The Main Ideas of the Story These parts of the story talked about women's fertility and obedience in the beginning. Once upon a time, men were asked to domesticate women. To relate these topics, the video went through some of the mythology of each subject throughout different countries of the world. In Greek mythology women were deemed as the problem creators of life. Way back when killing a woman was absolutely forbidden, but as time went on men started justifying killing women. In the story, women were turned into objects of patriarchy. There was a stigma of what women were or should have been. 2000 years ago, in the Buddhism and Hinduism religions goddesses became important figures.  Devi allowed her sons to be in control, but she did not allow them to control her. Devi also allowed people to grow beyond the anxiety that has created partiarchy and the anxiety that was creat

Gaia's Secret: Male Anxiety is Outdated Parts 1 and 2 The Messages within the Story Gaia is the Earth mother. (A picture that sort of represents the concept of Earth mother. Photo by Gravityx9 ) Males used to have to compete for females to the extent of fighting and killing each other for a woman's attention.  Over the years the status of women has been degraded. Women used to not be rejected or taken advantage of. Men eventually decided that rejecting women would protect themselves. In the beginning of time both genders owned their bodies, but over time men took over and began to degrade women. The Big Takeaway: Women were once independent and free of men and owned their bodies, however, over time things have changed and men now "own" women. The video talked about these issues that arose within the Indian culture and all over the world. To really get the messages through they told bits and pieces of Indian epics throughout the video. Tech Tip: Blogger Featured Post EC

Image
(My most popular post sidebar widget.  Screenshot by me, Hannah Mulder) This week for my tech tip I actually did not add a featured post to my sidebar because Blogger insisted that I already had one even though I do not, but trough this tech tip I figured out how to feature my most popular post, so I did that instead. I configured it to have only my topped viewed post from the last year. I also came up with a pretty witty name for the widget, or at least I thought it was.

Week 11 Review

Image
(Counting down the days until I get a well needed break!  Screenshot by me, Hannah Mulder) I have backed up my blog and portfolio website to my computer for safety measures. I have also checked the grade progress chart, and I am about a week and a half ahead of the schedule to get the grade I want. My favorite video from the past week of announcements was on Wednesday's announcement . It was called Enemy of the Reich: The Noor Inayat Khan Story - Trailer . This video was about a Muslim women, who was young. She helped Winston Churchill in the war against the Nazis. She made a name for herself and what she hoped and believed in. I thought this video was super interesting because of all the different aspects of everyone's background, yet they were all fighting against one thing. My favorite graphic from this week was the How Long to Nap picture guide from Thursday's announcement . This was my favorite because I love to nap, but sometimes I can go a little over board

Week 11 Story: Jara's Story of Significance

Image
Jara’s Story of Significance There was a forest that was as silent as could be. It seemed as if a single noise was made the whole world would have heard it. In the heart of the forest stood Jara. Jara was a hunter, more specifically an archer. Jara had been in the forest a while and started to get eerie feelings about the whole ordeal. He was the only living creature, so it seemed. He was on the hunt for any ounce of protein, but there was not one insect to be found. There were no birds singing or cooing from the tree tops. In fact, the trees themselves wilted in their death. Jara was convinced that he was the only leaving creature left on Earth. He was starving. He was exhausted. He was hanging on to his last ounce of energy for dear life. He was going mad and was ready to use everything left in him to draw his arrow if he heard a noise or saw any movement in hopes of whatever caught his attention was food. Finally, he saw a sliver of movement, and without thinking twice he d

Reading Notes: Krishna Krishna, Part B

Image
(The cover of the "Krishna Krishna" audio book.  Screenshot by me, Hannah Mulder) Part B Jarasandha Provoked Krishna became a politician. Jarasandha planned to attack Mathura. Krishna and Balarama went to scope out a new weapon, the boomerang. The Retreat of Jarasandha Jarasandha made it to Mathura just to find out Krishna was gone. Krishna trained the Pravarshana Hills people for war. Krishna planned to move the people of Mathura to Dwaraka, an island. Jarasandha went to Dwaraka for war but surrendered because of the threat of the new boomerang weapons. Destination Dwaraka The landscape of Dwaraka was described in this chapter. Narada laid out all the things that needed to be changed on the island before there could be inhibitors, but Krishna already had plans of his own for the new city. Rukmini's Wedding Rukmini is the daughter of Bhishmaka, the king of Vidarbha. Rukmini wanted to marry Krishna. Rukmi, Rukmini's brother, was a follow

Reading Notes: Krishna Krishna, Part A

Image
(A picture of the book cover. Screenshot by me, Hannah Mulder) This week I started reading the Kindle version of "Krishna Krishna." I have typed out the key part of each chapter below. Part A Introduction The introduction briefly explained Krishna's story. Prologue Jara, the hunter, was alone and convinced that he was the only living creature left on Earth until he shot his arrow, which ended up in Krishna's foot. Lord Krishna was not mad at Jara, in fact Krishna asked Jara to carry out one last mission for him. The mission Krishna had given Jara was to narrate his story. Jara told Narada Krishna's story so he could document it since Jara could not read or write. Narada's Discourse Gave a brief overview of who Narada was as a person. It explained the parameters that Jara was given when retelling Krishna's story. Krishna's complexity was compared to Rama's simplicity. Krishna had a great deal of respect for women. He helpe

Tech Tip: Canvas Gradebook EC

Image
(A game changer for this class in particular, but probably for future classes too. Screenshot by me, Hannah Mulder) This week for my tech tip I read up on the changes Canvas made to the gradebook this semester. I also learned that I can view my grades by a number of different categories. I am not going to lie, I am the worst a using Canvas, so I actually learned something today. It took me all last semester to learn how to input a theoretical grade, if that tells y'all anything.

Week 10 Review

Image
I have checked the grading chart, and I am a week or so ahead of the grading chart for obtaining my desired grade. I have also backed-up my blog and website to my computer. My favorite graphic this week was from Friday's announcement . I loved the Growth Mindset Cats picture. It was of course a picture of a cat, and it said, "We won't give up." It is just that point in the semester where most people probably feel like they are drowning in school work and whatever else might be going on in life. I think it was just a nice reminder that we will survive the semester alive. (An encouraging words booth. We all could probably use this right about now. Photo by Paul L Dineen ) My favorite video from this week was also from the Friday announcement . The video was called Ships of Ancient India by Epified . I chose this video because I like to learn more about the Indian culture when I choose to watch the announcement videos. I learned about the Indian trade relations

Week 10 Lab: TED Talks: Stories and Storytelling

Image
(A picture of a TED Talk stage from the audiences view.  Photo by TEDx Sydney )  For story lab this week, I have chosen to watch the Stories and Storytelling TED Talks . The first video, The Danger of a Single Story by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was really fascinating. That talk discussed the problems of the single story. One problem was that single stories lead to misunderstandings. The second problem with the single story was that it made people lose some of their dignity. I thought this was a super interesting topic. This video made me reflect on any misconceptions I may have of other countries, states, or people due to reading the same types of books that were basically all just a single story. I really enjoyed the first video. The second video was Imaginary Friends and Real-World Consequences: Parasocial Relationships by Jennifer Barnes. This was also an interesting topic. It took a psychology standpoint, which I thought was compelling. I found it insane how much people read

Reading Notes: Epified: Krishna, Part B

Image
(A Man Dressed as Krishna. Photo by Pranav Bhasin) Part B An Overview of What Happened in the Second Half of Krishna's Story The second half of the story starts with Brahma witnessing Krishna, a god, sharing his food off the same plate with his friends. The Brahma set up a test for Krishna, which displayed that Krishna was a very humble person. Hastin was a wild, mean cow. Everyone was scared of this cow except for Krishna. Krishna set up a plan to play his flute and feed to cow for a month. At the end of the month, Krishna rode the cow into the city, and all the people of Vrindavan were shocked at the miracle. Krishna wanted to marry Radha, but his parent were not excepting of that proposal. Krishna's father took him to Gargacharya. Gargacharya told Krishna that his destiny was not to marry Radha, and he also revealed the truth about Krishna's birth parents.  Kamsa got back to his mission of trying to kill Krishna, so he sent Akrur to persuade Krishna to go

Reading Notes: Epified: Krishna, Part A

Image
For this week's reading, I chose to watch the Krishna story through YouTube videos. I chose to do this because I felt like this option would give me a good overview and understanding of the Krishna story to begin with.   Part A A Summary of the First Half of the Krishna Story To begin, Krishna had enemies before he was ever born, and throughout his childhood as well, but he eventually became a king. Krishna's story started with the birth of the Pandava brothers. Kamsa the King of Mathura found out his cousin, Devaki, and her husband, Vasudev's eighth child would be responsible for his death, so he attempted to kill Devaki and Vasudev, however, Kamsa's sister pleaded with him and the couple ended up in jail. Kamsa killed the first six children birthed by Devaki. The seventh child was "transferred" to another woman's uterus. Devaki's eighth child was born a god and was never to be harmed. Vasudev took his eighth son and walked free of the u

Tech Tip: Canvas Calendar EC

Image
(A photo of my Canvas Calendar. A screenshot by me, Hannah Mulder.) In this Tech Tip, I learned how to add an event in my own personal calendar on canvas for unofficial due dates.  I also added my Canvas calendar into my Google calendar. I did not know you could do so much with the Canvas calendar; I always just thought it was there for only official due dates of class assignments. It was interesting and helpful to find out I could add my own dates into the calendar and combine it with the other platforms of calendars that I use more often.

Week 9 Review

Image
(A photo of a watch, which to me represents time is ticking and we are getting closer and closer to the end of the semester.  Photo by Daniel Estival ) This week I have backed up my portfolio website and my blog. As of right now I am still on track to get the grade I desire at the end of the semester.  My favorite graphic this week was from Wednesday's announcement . It was under the writing section of the announcement. The photo said, "Writing does not have to be perfect to be wonderful." I think it was a nice little reminder that just because I am not the best writer does not mean I cannot produce great works in this class. The video I liked the most this week was also from  Wednesday's announcement . The video I watched was called Manish Vyas, about Santoor . I like to use the announcements as a way to learn more about the Indian culture. This video was about an ancient musical instrument with Indian origins. The video explained the structure of th

Week 9 Story: Another Sweetwater River Incident

Image
(A photo of the "hangout" in the Riverdale T.V. series.  Photo provided by Wikipedia )  Another Sweetwater River Incident Jughead and Betty were sitting on the riverbank. They were swimming and having a picnic. They were enjoying each other’s company, when the Ghoulies appeared out of thin air. The Ghoulies ganged up multiple to one on Jughead. Before Jughead got to beat up he caringly pushed and ordered Betty to stay out of the violence. Betty backed away from the outbreak, but not before she grabbed her phone. Betty knew Jughead did not stand a chance when there was only one of him and at least fifteen Ghoulies, so she called in reinforcements. Jughead was nearly knocked completely out by the end of the attack, or at least what Betty thought was the end, he was hanging on by a thread. Even though Jughead was barely conscious, he was not strong enough to fight for himself. At that point his future was not looking good.  The Ghoulies knew that Jughead w

Reading Notes: Epified: Mahabharata Videos, Part B

Epified: Mahabharata Videos Part B A Summary of What Went Down We started where we left on in part A. Kunthi had a big secret. That secret was that she had a long-lost son that she put in basket and sent it down a river. Pandu, Kunti, and Madri retreated to the forest. Pandu was hunting one day and shot a hermit couple. The hermit man cursed Pandu. The curse was that Pandu would die if he had intimate relations with a woman. Kunti uses her gift to call upon god to bear children. Kunti has 3 sons of her own and called upon the god sone last time to give Madri her twin sons. Pandu dies of his curse, leaving Kunthi with the 5 sons. Gandhari's first pregnancy ended up as an abiotic lump instead of a child. The lump was taken and split into 100 pieces, which turned into Gandhari's 100 sons. Kunti and the Pandavas returned to the kingdom, this made Duryodhan angry. Duryodhan decided he was going to poison the Pandava brothers. Only Bheema was affected by the poison.

Reading Notes: Epified: Mahabharata Videos, Part A

Image
Epified: Mahabharata Videos I chose this "reading" because I am  visual learner and knew that this version would allow me to get a better understanding of The Mahabharata. Part A An overview of The Mahabharata It is the story of the Spirit of India. The whole thing is about how karma works. The idea everything happens because of previous events. A Summary of the Stories Bhishma is the long lost son of King Shantanu. King Shantanu goes back to the Ganga to find his son years later, therefore, Bhishma was grown. King Shantanu fell in love with a fisherman's daughter, but the fisherman refused to allow King Shantanu to marry his daughter. Bhishma vowed that he would never marry or sire any children, so his father could be happily married. One of Bhishma's brothers passed away leaving only one of them left to sire an heir, so Bhishma kidnaps three princesses from a different kingdom to become the wives of his one remaining brother. One of the princesses,

Tech Tip: Canvas notifications EC

Image
(A picture of a random phone notification.  Photo by Tim Wilson ) For my last tech tip, I downloaded the Canvas app after deleting it because it was glitching last semester and would not let me sign in. I have the Canvas notifications turned off because I personally hate my phone blowing up constantly, and I get the same notifications through my OU email. Not having the notifications on is just my preference when it comes down to it. However, I do check canvas multiple times a day to see if I have missed anything that did not come through as an email notification.

Week 8 Review

Image
I have backed up my website and blog to my computer. I am also still on track to make the grade I want at the end of the semester.  My favorite graphic this week was from the announcement on Thursday . It was in the growth mindsets cat section. I honestly did not really find a graphic this week that was truly my favorite, so I chose my favorite cat picture because cats are cute! (Just a photo of a cat for my enjoyment.  Photo by Neverending September ) The video I chose this week was on Saturday's announcement . The video was called " Ma - The Mother Goddess ." This video explained how the Mother Goddess in a big cultural symbol in India. She represents many things and has big presence.

Week 8 Progress

Image
(A picture that encompasses the theme of this blog post.  Photo by Alexander Baxevanis ) As of right now, I am happy with my grades in this class. I am usually about a week ahead of schedule by the end of each week. I have achieved this by taking advantage of the extra credit opportunities. I am not going to lie, I have not really stuck to my schedule too well, but I just have such a different schedule from week to week, so it is hard for me to stick to one specific schedule. Lately, I have been trying to work ahead of my personalized schedule. My favorite assignments in this class are probably the writings. I am not a good writer, but I have found myself enjoying writing and using my creativity.  For the second half of the semester, I plan to get ahead of schedule during spring break. I am taking some difficult science classes this semester, so I am going to take advantage of the opportunity to get ahead in this class while I can, so I can focus on my science courses as we g
