Week 3 Story: Rama and Sita's Story of Love at First Sight

Image
(A photo of Sita in statue form. I picked this photo because this story is Sita's introduction. Photo by Ye-Zu ) The daylight had not turned into complete darkness, but the sun was slowly seeping into the ground. Rama and Lakshmana were eager to explore the new city that was near them, but they needed permission to leave Vishvamitra, so they asked and were allowed to enter into the city. It might have been getting dark, but the city was still lively as ever; people were crowding the streets. The people starred at Rama and Lakshmana with curiosity. The princes were dressed in bright colors, with flashy accessories, and they were carrying weapons. Girls and women all through the city were taking notice of the fine looking princes and buzzing to each other about them. Some had thought Rama was fit for Janak's daughter, Sita.  The princes continued to roam the city, until they stopped at a field. The brothers observed there surroundings for awhile. The field was silent, yet

Reading Notes: PDE Ramayana, Part B

Image
(Above is a statue of Ravana. I chose this picture because I like to have a visuals of characters when I read. Photo by Arwen ) I have finished reading the PDE version of Ramayana, part B. The following are my notes. PDE Ramayana, Week 3: Part B Rama and Bharata , by Donald A. Mackenzie, found in Indian Myth and Legend : This episode is about Bharata going to the forest to try to get Rama to return to Ayodhya with him.  Most of this episode is written in a dialogue, which is rare. The action of this story is not the most exciting, but there is some action. This tale opens with Bharata going into the forest to look for his brother, Rama. The story closes with Rama stating that his father's orders cannot be undone considering he had passed away. The Sandals , by Donald A. Mackenzie, found in  Indian Myth and Legend : This tale is about Bharata giving his brother Rama shoe, but Rama refuses the gift because he feels he should live out his exile as it was inten

Reading Notes: PDE Ramayana, Part A

Image
(Rama and Sita in what appears to maybe be the forest. Photo by Barry Silver ) I have read the PDE version of Ramayana part A. These are my notes. PDE Ramayana , Week 3: Part A: The story line of this section is that the Dasharatha, king of Koshala, had no heirs. Therefore, he and his three wives made some sacrifices and participated in some rituals, and soon Dasharatha had four sons. One of his sons, Rama, was stunning in every way. Rama met a girl named Sita, and they eventually got married. Dasharatha decided to make Rama the official heir, but some people protested this idea, and in the end Rama was exiled to a forest for 14 year, with him went his wife, Sita, and his brother, Lakshmana. Sita , by F.J. Gould, found in The Devine Archer : This story basically just explains who Sita is, and how she met Rama. The story is told in third person most of the time. The story starts with a detailed description of the setting in the moment. I would not personally say there

My Feedback Thoughts

Image
Th first article I read was, Silence the Critical Voices in Your Head . I choose this article because I know I am my biggest critic, and most of the time I am brutally harsh on myself. Often times other people's validation of my actions or work has no meaning to me because I am too caught up in my own head. The funny thing is, I think I am a pretty uplifting source to other people, just not to myself. What I took from this article, is that maybe I need to be a more positive, uplifting person to myself, not just to others. I need to find the light in every circumstance I face, I need to say uplifting things to myself, I need to trust the positivity, and I need to interpret the positivity. My main take away from the article is that I should value other people's opinions over the perfectionist voice inside my head. (A picture of positive words. Photo by Carol VanHook ) The second article I choose to read was, Seven ways to Crush Self-Doubt.  As I said above, I am a perfec

Tech Tip: Blogger Design Template EC

Image
(My new blog design. Screenshot by me) I have used the blogger template tech tip to change my blog design. I changed the theme to a more suitable theme for my personality. I personally love flowers and floral designs, so I changed my blog to a floral header and a simple body design. I also made all the text on the different parts of the blog page one font.

Reading Notes EC: The Missing Queen Part A

Image
(The book cover. Screenshot by me) I have started reading The Missing Queen by Samhita Arni. I bought the e-book on Amazon. I have read through part A and here are some notes. This story is based on the traditional characters of traditional Indian epics. This story is also set in modern day. The person narrating is a journalist that is writing up a report. The storyline up to this point is kind of an investigation of the truth about the Rama(Ram), and Sita tale.  So far I have picked up that Sita has been taken and Ram is sort of pleading his case. I am not sure I fully picked up the whole story of chapters one through seven, so I will most likely need to go back and reread before I start reading part B.

Week 2 Review

Image
I have completed my Blogger back up for this week, but I did not back up my Google Site, given I have not created one yet. For my weekly check-up on my grades, I have not done my thoughts about the feedback because I was late to posting my storybook topic ideas. Therefore, I still have not gotten feedback and realize I may not because I did not complete the previous assignment in a timely manner.   Other than that, I am caught up for the week.   I have reviewed the weekly announcement and found a video called, Karma - Action and Reaction by Epified . I choose to watch this video given that I might use Karma as my storybook topic and that it might be helpful in the future for this class. The video was short, and gave an overview of Karma, not the god, but how Karma works in the world. My favorite graphic this week was on Friday, it was the mythology humor graphic . I just found it funny, yet it is so true. (A photo of a calendar, representing how much work I need to get done! Photo

My Topic Brainstorm for my Storybook or Portfolio

Image
1. Traditional Foods: I got this idea from reading a previous student's storybook called, The Epics of Food .  This is one of the topics I am  leaning towards. I like the idea of using this topic for my story book because I like to try new foods, and I also just like learning about the cultures of other countries. I think food is a huge factor of culture. Indian food is a territory I have not explored yet. However, I am always looking for new recipes to try, so I think I would really enjoy this topic. Below is a picture of a table full of the Indian cuisine.  ( Photo by Emily ) 2. Stories of Karma: I was introduced to this topic by reading   The Karma Diaries storybook. I find this an interesting topic because it  is sort of in the criminal justice genre. I believe Karma is also a god from what I understand, so that is also an interesting detail for this topic too. I really like the justice court scene, and I also would like to learn about the gods and goddesses in the Ind

Week 2 Story: The Foolishness of Viral Trends

Image
I have added this story to my portfolio website . I have tweaked and added some things to the website edition. (A Photo of Social Media Logos. Photo by Sean MacEntee ) Epilogue: Imagine this it is the year 2018, and the use of social medias are at an all time high. There is a new viral trend every other week, if not sooner. New dance moves are being created, new hashtags are exploding in the Twitterverse, videos are reaching everyone and their mother, and new challenges are being crated, which are getting more dangerous every time a new one comes out. Most all teenagers and sometimes beyond people of that age group are trying to set off a new trend, or trying to obtain fame somehow or another through social medias. The Foolishness of Viral Trends: It is the first day back to school after Christmas break for 17-year-old Misty. She has been sitting in classes all day going through the motions, not actually paying attention, but during this time she had been pondering i

Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology

Image
The Foolish, Timid Rabbit Jataka Tales By Ellen C. Babbitt The Plot: The basic story line was that there was one fool who made an assumption, and most everyone followed the fool without question. I feel like I have heard this same message in a few different ways and that it did not have much of a plot twist. If I were to create my own version of this story I might want to create a more dramatic and noticeable plot twist. If I were to use this tale as a base, I would probably turn this into a relatable situation.  The Setting: In seems like a savanna type landscape, yet there are coconuts there too? I almost feel like the scene where all the animals are running gives me the image of all the animals running in The Lion King . The Rabbit: The Rabbit's greatest downfall was his fear of a simple thought. The Rabbit's fear was that the Earth was falling apart. The Lion: The Lion's strength in this story is the fact that he processed what was going on and i

Week 2 Reading Overview

Image
I have decided to read the  Public Domain Edition version of Ramayana . I chose this version because I think that the different author's and writing styles might be interesting. I also like that there is a free audio version, so I can listen and learn how to correctly pronounce the character names if I have difficulties. I also like there are images. Images in my opinion give more context to the story, especially if I am learning about a new country I have not studied before. I am not crazy about the old-fashioned language, but there were pros and cons to both versions.  The Hidden Treasure: Wisdom Wins a War I have chosen this comic book in particular based off the title because there was not a summary. In any case, I chose this book because it sounds like it is about wisdom, and I mean I can always use a nice book about wisdom every so often. This also appeared to be a stand alone tale, and I prefer to read stand alone novels normally.  Sudama: The Power of True Friendship

My Time Strategies

Image
(Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.  Photo by Majdan ) I would consider myself a typical type A person. I have a certain system for everything in my life. I have been characterized as OCD every since I can remember; therefore, I am definitely not a procrastinator, but it has taken me a while to find time managing skills that suit me.  As a freshman in junior college, I took a semester long time management course, since then I have found many methods that suit me the best. My first method is to get a planner and plan everything out for the semester. My second method is to write out a to do list for the week ahead and then condense that down into the days of the week. Another thing that really helps me, is to plan out every hour of the day. I know this might seem excessive and yes there are some days this just does not happen on paper, but I at least try to plan it out in my head in the morning. I also found that when enrolling in classes, that having just one or no classes on two days

New Technology Tools

Image
Technology is a scary thing for me. I am not tech savvy at all, but I am excited to gain new technology tools as I continue this course. I  know at some point in life I will probably need some, if not all, of these new skills, so I am ready to embrace this journey. This is my first class to not be solely dependant on Canvas, so I am slowly learning all the new website we are using in this class. I have been bookmarking pages to keep up. I am nervous about all this new technology, however, I am delighted to be learning new skills that will only help me in the future.  (Technological concept  used on an eye.  Photo by Chris Urbanowicz )

My First Thoughts on the Weekly Assignments

Image
(A student walking through a library.  Photo by Matt Madd ) My first impressions of this class is that it is going to be a fun and interesting journey. I thought this of the course because of the unique grading method, all of the extra credit, and the ability to finish early. This is unlike any class I have taken a at junior college or at OU. I think this class is going to be a great experience. I have also never blogged before, but I have found that I am enjoying blogging.  For the assignments, I think I am the most excited for the readings and the blog comments. I am excited for the readings because I have never studied any country outside of the German speaking countries and America of course, and I am thrilled to learn about a new country and its culture. I am excited to do the blog comments because I think it will be fun to get to know and interact with other people in the class.

My experience with the Growth Mindset

Image
(The word mindset made out of Scrabble tiles.  Photo by Steve Davis )  The first time I heard about the Growth Mindset was at the beginning of this week in my general chemistry class. However, I had no idea who the originator of this theory was. After watching the video by Dr. Carol Dweck, I have thought about what was being said and really thought about myself growing up.  Growing up my parents pushed me to be my best. They pushed me to get the perfect A's everyone wanted their kid to have, so I guess in a sense I was in a fixed mindset as far as what my parents expected out of me. With that being said, my parents also taught the valuable lesson that nothing would ever be given to me that I had to push myself to achieve my own personal goals. I feel as though over time my parents stopped pushing me and it became my own personal mission to do my best in all aspects of life for my own good. I think the transition from my parents' expectations to my own personal expectat

Introduction to a Struggling Pre-Med Student

Image
Howdy, my name is Hannah Mulder. I am from a small city in northeast Texas, named Greenville.  My family is made up of my parents, my sister, MaKenzy, and me. We have three dogs, 5 cats, and on occasion, we may or may not have some sort of farm animal.  (Pictured here is my mom, me, and my sister. My dad is camera shy, so he is not pictured. Photo by me) (Above is a picture of my dog, Tootsie. Photo by me)     I am a biology, pre-medicine major. My immediate goal is to survive this semester and every semester between now and graduation. My ultimate goal is to become an ophthalmologist, specialized in laser eye surgery. I am classified as a freshman meaning a first-year student at OU, but I classify as a junior by hours. Last semester I took Intro to biology: Molecules, cells, and Physiology, Beginning German, and Precalculus: Business, Life, and Social Sciences. My favorite class from last semester was Beginning German. German was my favorite because of the atmosphere. It

My Indian Epic Storybook Favorites

Image
There were so many storybooks and portfolios to choose from. I may or may not have gotten distracted by reading all of them, but here are three of my favorite storybooks and portfolios I have read.  The Karma Diaries This storybook really caught my eye after I opened up the link. I feel like the title doesn't encompass the general idea of karma, as we know it. The introduction of it all presented a criminal scene, mixed with the traditional though of karma. I enjoy the criminal and mystery genre, so I ended up finding the cases presented in the project interesting. The layout and design of this project was simple, yet it was still appealing to reader.  The Epics of Food The title of this storybook correlated well with the topic of the discussion. The design was pleasant to look at, and the web page was easy to navigate.  The pictures along with the introduction of this storybook peaked my interest from the start. In my high school world geography class we used to bring "

Switzerland, My Favorite Place!

Image
I have not traveled very much, but there is one destination that will always be one of my favorite places to visit. Lucerne, Switzerland. I went to the beautiful city of Lucerne about a year ago on vacation. I spent two full days in the city. I experienced a 35 minute gondola ride up to Mount Pilatus , which happens to be above the clouds. It was such a beautiful and serene view. I also took a walking tour through the city. I learned about the culture, history, and myths of the city. Lucerene was such a incredible experience for me. The following picture is of the view at the top of Mount Pilatus :  (Photo by Hannah Mulder) Here is a picture of the Chapel Bridge: ( Photo by Tony Fernandez )
