Week 12 Lab: TEDed Language

(Not completely sure what this is, but it describe the topic of this blog post perfectly. 

TEDed Language Lab

  • How Languages Evolve
    • Way back when, groups of people split from their original groups and were isolated.
    • So, different dialects turned into new languages.
    • There are between 3,000 and 8,000 languages nowadays.
  • How did English evolve?
    • Germanic language turned into Old English. 
    • Old English got mixed in with Old Norse
    • French and Latin got thrown into the mix and there English was.
  • How many verb tenses are there in English?
    • 3 grammatical tenses 
    • 4 grammatical aspects
  • Are Elvish, Klingon, Dothraki, and Na'vi real languages?
    • Conlang means constructed language.
    • These languages are developed enough to actually speak them.
  • Where do new words come from?
    • 1,000 new words are created every year on average.
    • New word maybe borrowed from other languages.
    • New word can be mixes of a couple or several words together.
  • How to use a semicolon
    • If you have too many commas use a semicolon if appropriate.
    • Semicolons provide fluidity and variety in sentences.
  • When to use apostrophes
    • Apostrophes show when there is possession, a contraction, or a plural form of a word.
  • Does grammar matter?
    • Grammar is standardized to allow for broader communications.
    • Speech is separate from writing.
    • Grammar is complex.

  1. Hi Hannah!

    This is actually really fascinating. I am taking the History of the English Language this semester with Dan Ransom (I recommend it heartily) and we go into depth about the changes and their causes. This outline actually sums it up pretty well. Words were just kind of thrown into the English language (either by wars, migrations, changes in government etc) at least back then it used to take a couple decades for things to take hold. Now someone uses a new word on social media and it becomes a new thing overnight!
