Week 7 Story: OU vs TX Friendship
I have revised this story on my portfolio website. Please click the embedded link.
Prologue:
Jade was born in November of 1998 to her parents Kelly and Shaun. She was the first of two children. Today she is twenty-years-old living deep in the heart of Texas.
In October of 1999, Kelly and Darren welcomed their second daughter, Hailey, into the world. Hailey is now nineteen-years-old, and she is attending college.
Jade and Hailey are connected by their parents, in particular their mothers. Kelly and Kelly had met each other when they were in college. Weird enough, they happened to have the same name and the same goal of becoming a registered nurse. They became best friends. They did everything together. They eventually graduated from college, but that did not keep them apart. They both got careers at the same establishment. They moved from their small, country town to a bigger city in Texas together. Then they had their daughters eleven moths apart, so it was only natural for Jade and Hailey to be best friends.
An OU vs TX Friendship:
It was a nice October day, Kelly had just given birth to Hailey. They cleaned the baby up and got Kelly all situated. It was the moment everyone had been waiting for, Jade was finally about to meet her best friend forever. They went to the waiting room to get baby Jade. Jade waddled behind everyone not really comprehending what was about to happen. Jade's mom opened they door to Kelly's room and gave Jade the okay to toddle right on in. Once Jade saw her Aunt Kelly there was no apprehension, she ran straight to her bed side to see what was up. Jade wiggled her way up onto the bed, and saw the new baby. Kelly and Kelly were showing Jade baby Hailey, and in the moment Jade and Hailey's eyes met everyone knew these two were meant to be the best of friends for as long as they live.
The girls were best friends since day one of Hailey's existence. Too many peoples' surprise Kelly and Kelly did not even have to force Jade and Hailey to be besties. The girls were raised together. They were inseparable. Hailey was constantly at Jade's house, for some reason they preferred Kelly and Shaun's house over Hailey's parents house. They were in dance classes together. They took gymnastics classes together. They started doing tumbling and cheer together. They were two best friends having the time of their life. However, the girls were not in the same grade.
When Jade went to sixth grade, the girls started to drift apart a little bit. They did not ride to school together anymore because Jade went to a new school. They did not get to go home from school together either. This caused the girls to have to make new friends because they did not have each other at school anymore. Finally the girls' friendship returned to normal when the girls were both in middle school, and they were cheering together again. Then again they fell into the old cycle of being at different schools when Jade became a freshman.
When Hailey became a freshman, things still did not go back to normal. Hailey had grown into a shy, get stuff done type of girl, and Jade had become an outgoing, social but still determined girl. The two girls were clashing in personality left and right, but they still loved each other. However, the end was near for their friendship.
In Jade's junior year of high school, she had decided she was going to attend the University of Texas, but it was a bad decision for her because Hailey was a die hard OU fan and had already made her plans to be a Sooner. This was the end of their relationship as they and everyone around them knew it. The girls were already falling apart, and then they added the Red River Rivalry to their list of disagreements. Jade and Hailey were too competitive to let their school rivalry settle and become civil again. They were now enemies and rightfully so. The Red River Rivalry is something that has kept them apart for years, and that will not ever change.

Although the girls were no longer friends, their mothers were still as close as they ever were, and the girls still had to be in the same room at "family" gatherings.
Author's Note:
This story was based off of the original story Drona. I only really kept a small sliver of the plot. I kept the plot of two best friends becoming enemies. I changed the characters, I added a prologue, I put it in a modern day text, and there were no parts written in first person. I changed the characters because I was not putting the original story in my own words, and wanted to create my own story. I added the prologue to give context to the background of the characters, and a significance to the girls' friendship. I put it in modern day text and wrote it only in third person because that was the writing style I choose for this story. I also want to say, this story is partially based off of real events in my life, but the whole story is not based off of events that have taken place in my life.

Hey Hannah!
ReplyDeleteI really like how you took the basic plot of Drona and put a modern twist on it. I felt like the story was really relatable and is something that happens to a lot of people when they change schools and grow up. I was best friends with a group of girls all through out elementary school but I ended up going to a different school than them and when we got to high school we were all completely different people. I feel like it's a part of growing up and seeing how you took this topic from an ancient story and related it to modern time was really interesting.
Hey there, Hannah!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your story today! I think it was such a clever idea to take a Mahabharata story and turn it not only into a modern setting, but one that hits home for us OU students! I feel like everyone has a friend that they've drifted away from, too, so this story probably hits home for people in more ways than one. My dad went to UT, so when I chose to come to OU, he was very hesitant. We never drifted apart, but our yearly OU/TX watch party gets a little heated!!
Hi Hannah,
ReplyDelete(I did read the updated version in the portfolio.)
This definitely demonstrates how certain things really are just universal, however mystical, ancient, pedestrian, or modern their trappings may be. Stylistically, I wonder if you maybe shouldn’t merge your prologue and main text; there doesn’t seem to be any particularly pressing reason to keep them apart (unlike Jade and Hailey…).
It might also be interesting to introduce some of the asymmetry between Drona and his childhood friend from the original. Right now you have a very parallel path for the two main characters, which can work very well but might constrain the story somewhat?
Best,
A.M.
Hey Hannah! I really enjoyed reading your story about the OU/TX rivalry friendship. That plot was too funny and so close to home! ;) I liked the names you gave the characters, they were cute! This story is definitely something a lot of your readers can relate to. This was a really creative twist on the story of Drona! Awesome job, oh, and BOOMER!
ReplyDeleteHi Hannah! This was a neat story. Even though it was in third person, I could tell it was at least partially based off your own life. One note - you may consider moving your Author's note to the top. I spent the whole story trying to figure out which Hindu Epic you were retelling. Otherwise, I like it. You did a good job of showing how life caused the two best friends to gradually drift apart.
