Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology

The Foolish, Timid Rabbit
Jataka Tales By Ellen C. Babbitt

  • The Plot:
    • The basic story line was that there was one fool who made an assumption, and most everyone followed the fool without question.
    • I feel like I have heard this same message in a few different ways and that it did not have much of a plot twist.
    • If I were to create my own version of this story I might want to create a more dramatic and noticeable plot twist.
    • If I were to use this tale as a base, I would probably turn this into a relatable situation.
  • The Setting:
    • In seems like a savanna type landscape, yet there are coconuts there too?
    • I almost feel like the scene where all the animals are running gives me the image of all the animals running in The Lion King.
  • The Rabbit:
    • The Rabbit's greatest downfall was his fear of a simple thought.
    • The Rabbit's fear was that the Earth was falling apart.
  • The Lion:
    • The Lion's strength in this story is the fact that he processed what was going on and investigated before jumping to conclusions.
  • My Cast:
    • I am not sure who I would use as a cast, but I do think I might want to use human beings as the characters.

Eastern Stories and Legends by Marie L. Shedlock

  • The Plot:
    • The theme of this tale was that the one trying to fool the other should also be aware that they are just as capable of having the same done to them.
    • If this is the story line I choose, I will mostly likely rewrite it as a more realistic scenario.
    • This story did not have a huge plot twist, but I think that The Crocodile revealing his true intentions to The Monkey before the task has been completed can be considered a plot twist.
    • As I have said before, I might create a bigger plot twist if I decide to rewrite this story.
  • The Setting:
    • I picture this in a jungle on a riverside.
  • The Monkey:
    • The Monkey's strength was realizing that he was being tricked, but also figuring a way out to use the "trick" to his advantage.
    • I think the Monkey's fear would have to be that his plan might have gotten compromised, if The Crocodile were to catch on.
  • The Crocodile:
    • The Crocodile's weakness was not realizing that he was being played himself.
    • The Crocodile's greatest hope in this situation was that his plan would go smoothly.
  • The Cast:
    • This story line is the same as the one before, I am not definite on the actual people I would cast, but if I rewrite it, I would make the characters humans.
